Southern Shores NC was the first Outer Banks development
way back in 1947 and officially become a town in 1979. Much
has changed over the years and much remains the same.
Southern Shores is tucked south of Duck and north of Kitty
Hawk on a sliver of land just one mile wide. Vacation homes
and cottages are on quiet streets with a quick walk to private
beaches. Shops and fast or fine dining are a short drive away.
Southern Shores NC remains a private residential community
with little commercial development. Real estate for sale offers
traditional homes as well as salty cottages and fashionable
beach mansions. Privacy and low-density development keep the

NC Routes 12 and 158 merge as you head south to Kill Devil Hills NC. Old Bodie Lighthouse is just south of Nags Head NC and the Cape Hatteras National Park soon appears. A quick detour on the Virginia Dare Trail leads to the Roanoke Island community of Manteo and the Dare County Regional Airport. Back on the beach and through Cape Hatteras is
Ocracoke Island NC and one the oldest lighthouses on the North Carolina coast still on active duty.
